No Nonsense

Corfu has several associations with writers: Lawrence Durrell, Harold Pinter, Edward Lear. The island is stunningly beautiful, but even in early summer the coastline is overpeopled and overboated. Nothing new, though. In the 1860s, while staying in Paleokastritsa, Lear announced he was leaving, because there were too many picnic parties.

  1. Follow the Kazantzakis trail instead. Naxos was lovely and quiet ... until the Greek mobs began to arrive in early July. None of the Cyclades were affected by strikes either.
