Earlier this week I stumbled across the following sentence, written by Archie Bland, deputy editor
of The Independent: "And actually, I don't think Suzy or me or any of those 350,000 others have a leg to stand on." Apart from the bizarre image of 350,002 people having or not having a leg, I was bothered by Mr Bland's grammar: Me have.
Also this week I read a reference to the occasion when, in 1997, the Bee Gees walked out of Clive Anderson's TV chat show. The article described Barry Gibb as the elder of the three brothers.
I bristle when I encounter such language misuse but if I complain I run the risk of being labelled a pedant in need of a life.
Could I possibly be a pedant? Am I in need of a life?
Anyway - must stop. I have to arrange the contents of my shed in alphabetical order.
