The Invisible Poet

On Saturday (13th December) I ventured to the Scottish Poetry Library for a HappenStance launch involving four poets. Two of these were familiar faces (Gerry Cambridge and Hamish Whyte) and two unfamiliar (C.J. Driver and Tom Vaughan). Although I was keen to see and hear all four writers, I was intrigued by the rather mysterious Mr Vaughan, because, we are told, he is a retired British diplomat who has had personal involvement in the Middle East and Afghanistan. And he writes under a pseudonym. HappenStance publisher, Helena Nelson, has never met the man. Almost James Bond territory, I thought.

But Mr Vaughan remained characteristically invisible. At the last minute a message was sent saying he wouldn't be attending the event. Does he exist?  Or could there be someone out there impersonating him?
